SUFFER ROOM
Video Production Project
Project Information
Jon Joslin asked me to create a music video for his haunting song "Suffer Room".
I shot all the footage in a bar using a spotlight and a few bar lights for lighting. I created several special effects and environments with simple props and a few cut up garbage bags. The entire video was shot using an iPhone.
We enlisted several friends to participate in the video.

My inspiration for much of the style of the video came one night lying in bed watching the shadows from car headlights outside my window as they moved across the ceiling. The dreamy effect lent itself to the overall look and feel of this video.
So for the title sequence and a few other moments, I re-created the rooms we shot in as 3D environments and then simulated car "drive-by" lighting. After rendering the moving lights, I overlaid them onto the existing footage.
Editing
When I shoot music videos, I usually have an overall sense of the direction and a general style I want to achieve, but I like to leave some details to improvisation and inspiration on set.
This can create a challenging editing situation. But adopting an improvisational attitude when editing allows for magical surprises and discoveries to happen which weren't planned.
